Portret van Michelle Dujardin met hond Bodhi

Meet Michelle Dujardin

Hi, I’m Michelle – a Dutch illustrator, author and nature lover born in 1979. My work is based on a deep connection to the natural world, shaped by a background in psychology and a passion for creativity. I originally studied clinical and health psychology at Leiden University, but In 2010 I decided to follow my heart and to start my own creative company.

My lifelong love of drawing and painting led me to explore the psychological and spiritual dimensions of creativity. That journey brought me into contact with Buddhist psychology, the scientific approach to drawing of Betty Edwards, and the spiritual approach of Frederick Franck – whose Zen drawing method helped everything fall into place. This blend of mindfulness and art still forms the foundation of my work today.

My style

My artistic style is quiet, minimalistic and intuitive. It combines pencil drawings and watercolor, and often focuses on birds, animals, plants and trees. Whether it's a crashing wave, a kingfisher, or a delicate wildflower – I try to capture the stillness and soul of the natural world. I believe every drawing starts with slowing down and truly seeing.

Personal life

In many of my videos, you can get a glimpse of my dog Bodhi, accompanied by a mysterious grey-haired man – that’s Willem, my partner. Willem not only joins me on my nature walks, but also contributes to my books and takes care of the business side of my company. I’m truly grateful for his calm presence, quiet wisdom, and steady support.

Connection to nature

I grew up with a deep love for nature, and still feel happiest when I'm outdoors with my sketchbook or camera in hand. My home is filled with plants, crystals, fossils, an aquarium, a rabbit, and a dog—things I also love writing about on my blog.

I'm always looking for ways to genuinely connect with the natural world around me, even if it's just for a brief moment while walking Bodhi, stopping to admire a tree or a flower in bloom. I often capture these small moments with my camera. Sometimes, I even use a device that translates plant activity into sound, allowing me to literally listen to nature. It's these small, unexpected encounters with plants and animals that make my days just a little brighter.

Books

I have also written books on Zen drawing and watercolor painting: 'Het Zen tekenboek' (Dutch, 2012), 'The Zen drawing Pack'
(English 2014) and 'Watercolor in simpele stappen' (Dutch 2021). The books have all been sold out, but several ebook versions are still available on Amazon and Apple.
